Weddings and Baptism

Weddings

Many couples choose to get married in this beautiful church. If you are planning a wedding then we will be very pleased to discuss this with you when we can talk about what is involved, possible dates and also the costs. Please do make contact with us at the earliest opportunity so that we can help you.

There have been changes to the law recently to make it easier for couples to choose which church they would like to get married in, but there are still rules which we must follow. To be married at St Mary’s ONE of you will need to be able to show ANY ONE from the following list.

That one of you:

  • has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
  • was baptised in the parish or
  • was prepared for confirmation in the parish or
  • has at any time regularly gone to normal church services at St Mary's for a period of at least 6 months or

that one of your parents, at any time after you were born:

  • has lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
  • has regularly gone to normal church services at St Mary's for a period of at least 6 months or

that one of your parents or grandparents:

  • was married in the parish

Remember that only one of you has to meet the criteria and it can be any one of the criteria above. If you are at all unsure please do contact us.

It is not always clear to people which church parish they live in as housing estates can easily cross parish boundaries. To check if an address falls in the parish follow the link to a church near you and enter the postcode.

You can find a lot of very useful information to help you plan your wedding (such as suggestions for readings and music) from the Church of England website here.

To arrange a date for a wedding and to talk about any other matters concerned with it, you can contact the parish office (01243 – 826 886) to make an appointment or drop into the parish office at St Mary’s Centre on a Wednesday evening (6.15 – 7.15 p.m. during school term time).

You will both need to bring in a current passport as well as something showing your name and current address (bank statement, utility bill or council tax bill).

Baptisms

We are very pleased to baptise children and adults at St Mary's. Baptisms should take place in your own parish church. Please use this link to enter your postcode to check which parish you live in. If you would like your child to be baptised at St Marys then please call into the parish office on a Wednesday evening (6.15 - 7.15 p.m. during school term time) or contact the parish office (01243 - 826 886) to make an appointment to discuss this.

Baptisms are normally held on the last Sunday of the month at 12.30 p.m.The following Sunday you are asked to come to the 11 a.m. Family Eucharist to be welcomed by the church family and to receive the baptism candle and certificate.
